California Governor Gavin Newsom admitted to cleaning up the city of San Francisco, notorious for its drug, crime, and homeless epidemics, ahead of a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Jinping is attending an important U.S.-China summit this week and is anticipated to meet with his American counterpart, President Joe Biden, on Wednesday for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit (APEC).

Local media outlets noticed and reported that homeless encampments and open-air drug communities had disappeared ahead of the visit.

When questioned on the matter, Newsom admitted that the cleanup effort was for Biden and Xi’s benefit, as well as their respective entourages.

“I know folks are saying, ‘Oh they’re just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming to town,’” he said. “That’s true, because it’s true.”

Newsom: ‘It’s True’ We Cleaned Up San Francisco For Xi

Newsom was openly criticized on social media after admitting that the streets of San Francisco were cleaned up ahead of Xi Jinping’s visit.

Melissa Melendez, a former California state senator, took to the X social media platform formerly known as Twitter to suggest that Newsom had ordered homeless camps removed in San Francisco “in an obvious attempt to impress his new best friend, China’s Communist dictator.”

“Pity he’s had no desire to impress those who actually live in California,” she added.

Much of the criticism volleyed at Newsom involved observations that the streets of one of America’s most famous cities aren’t cleaned up for its actual residents.

“Newsom unapologetically admits he only cleaned up San Francisco because Xi’s is coming to town—what he failed to explain is where all the homeless people are now,” one woman wrote.

Newsome defended the clean-up by suggesting that it also happened because his administration has been having conversations about “rais(ing) the bar of expectation” in cities across the state.

Californians, he said, will be “seeing a lot more of this all around town and all around the Bay Area.”

Where Did They Go? Were They Kidnapped?

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele recently portrayed American cities as “wastelands” plagued by bad policies and gutted law and order programs.

Again, that’s the President of El Salvador describing American cities as “wastelands.”

San Francisco is a prime example. But, as X CEO Elon Musk asks, “Where did they (the homeless) go?”

That seems like a relevant question considering Newsom wanted Florida Governor Ron DeSantis brought up on kidnapping charges after relocating illegal immigrants.

This isn’t the first time Newsom has shipped homeless people out of town in an effort to make sure they weren’t an eyesore.

As reported by The Political Insider previously, the California Democrat, as mayor of San Francisco back in 2004, implemented a program known as “Homeward Bound” which scooped up the city’s homeless and sent them on one-way bus rides out of town.

A column by SFist at the time described it as a program with a nice name that masks the fact that it “gives unsheltered San Franciscans a one-way Greyhound bus ticket out of town and asks them to please never come back.”

In a similar theatrical fashion, illegal immigrants were cleared out in El Paso, Texas ahead of a visit by President Biden earlier this year.

Some might suggest both San Francisco and El Paso were ensuring two dictators couldn’t see what left-wing policies actually do to a community.
